Rethinking the Technology Issue

This post is dedicated to Bas~Melech, my coworker, my little sister, my mother, and all other people who hate hanging around with me in places that have wifi.

As my little sister said: "if you had to chose between your cell phone or your ipod touch, what would you chose?" She thought for a few minutes and said... "You'd probably chose death." I'll have you know that I resent this, and that I am perfectly fine without my touch...for a bit. ;) It takes a few hours for me to start feeling 'out of touch'. (Get it?)

And as funny as this cartoon might be, it is sadly coming true. I was just speaking to a girl who teaches pre-school, and she said that she has students hide their cell phones under their shirts to go out and call their mother. Five year old kids who are already learning to conceal their phones? Scary...

I wrote about this once before, but I am starting to think I should have added a post-script to that post. I wrote that I am all for technological advances...but I am shuddering at the thought. I think back to my day-camp counselor days and imagine my campers who could barely talk and had just gotten toilet trained...on cell phones.
It's a scary world I tell you...

Oysh.

You know, there's plenty out there on how to "deal" with students from low-SES families and their "issues"... but frankly I think the spoiled ones are worse any day...

Thats the way of the world, instead of passing notes its texting notes. and instead of asking your friend for the spelling word, you use your cell phone to spell the word. The wave of the future.

The truth hurts, huh?
I'm not 'touched' yet, but I hate when I'm teased about being obsessed with the computer, cell or whatever. And I'm not so bad;)

Yes, its a big scary world out there, and its only becoming worse:(

Ouch. Too much "in touch" is a bad thing, in my opinion. Having said that, I'm one of those who is trying to break the addiction. Any advice?

B~M- of course they are. But I guess I'm different ways. And jsyk I am shocked that I didn't get a laugh for the cartoon. After my wifi search in the park....

CIB- yeah, have you seen these texting machines that work like walkie talkies? (Not a full cell phone.) My lil sibs say I sound like a grandmother when I say this, but when I was a kid we had walkie-talkies, not walkie-texties.
But don't you think it's scary?

Insp- I think you are worse than me...! ;-)

Lvnsm- yeah. It really is. Don't we sound old talking like this? I feel like my grandmother.

NMF- if I knew how to break the addiction I wouldn't be the one who rates malls based on the strength and availablitity of their free guest wifi. :-P My advice? I guess just to channel it...

What makes you think so?

Insp- I was kidding. But jsyk, I was out all day today with a friend and I didn't check for wifi even once. You listening Bas~Melech? And I didn't pick up any calls or answer any texts either!
